A STEP-BY-STEP IMPRESSION TECHNIQUE

Step 1. Pack all gingival margins with 2-or 3-ply hemostatic impregnated soft cotton cord to a depth and width of 1 mm.

Step 2. Isolate the maxillary area with cotton rolls or dri-angles and the mandibular area with cotton rolls in a holder and a saliva ejector.

Step 3. The cord should be placed in the sulcus for 3-7 minutes. Temporization for full coverage can be done at this time.

Step 4. Spray clean the preparation and dry it. As the assistant gently blows air into the sulcus, the cord is being withdrawn by the operator.

Step 5. The operator examines the preparation for cleanliness, margin clarity, and adequate gingival retraction while the assistant continues to keep the sulcus dry. No bleeding should be present.

Step 6. The operator continues to maintain a dry field while the assistant places the impression material on the pad and commences to mix.

Step 7. The assistant loads the syringe and passes it to the operator who inserts the impression material into and around the preparation. The assistant aids in retraction during this time.

Step 8. The operator resumes the retraction while the assistant loads the impression tray and hands it back to the operator for insertion, when the assistant again retracts the tongue or cheek.

Step 9. The operator or assistant holds the tray steadily in the mouth until the impression material is completely set. Allowing a minute or two more will insure that the set is complete.

Step 10. Remove the impression tray from the mouth with a snap and check for clarity and adequacy. The impression material should extend beyond the gingival margins.
