A
STEP-BY-STEP PROCEDURE FOR FERRIER CLASS V GOLD FOIL INSERTION
Step 1. Apply copalite varnish with a cotton pledget
to the axial wall, keeping clear of the peripheral walls.
Step 2. Using the correct size of noncohesive pellet,
a bar is formed and inserted into the cavity to line the
proximal walls first. The parallelograms are used to compact
the bar against the wall. The proximal walls are lined,
followed by the gingival and the incisal or occlusal.
Step 3. Using a .5 straight condenser (Ferrier #1)
and the Woodbury holding instrument, a size 1/64th cohesive
pellet is placed in the mesial or distal point angle and
condensed toward the point angle while the assistant is
malleting. The pellets are added and condensed until a bar
of gold is built across the gingival wall to the opposite
point angle. The cohesive gold is stabilized with the holding
instrument during condensation until it is tied into the
incisal or occlusal wall.
Step 4. Condensation continues up the proximal walls
with the .75 straight condenser (Ferrier #3) to tie the
gingival bar into the occlusal or incisal wall. An offset
condenser should be used to condense the foil against the
occlusal or incisal wall.
Step 5. Using a .75 straight condenser, pellets are
added in a saucerlike manner out to the cavosurface margin
starting at the gingival. Care is taken to pinch off the
noncohesive gold as the cavosuface margin is approached
with the cohesive gold. Any excess gold at the cavosurface
is removed with the back of the gold knife after each pellet
is condensed. Each pellet is condensed always toward a wall.
Step 6. The proximal walls are continued to be built
up in a saucerlike fashion, the noncohesive gold pinched
off and the excess removed as the cavosurface is approached.
The foil is condensed into the proximal occlusal or incisal
line angles with the .75 straight condenser parallel to
the occlusal or incisal wall.
Step 7. The offset condenser is now used to build
up the occlusal or incisal wall up to the cavosurface margin.
Check to see that all the margins are covered with gold
by running the explorer from gold to tooth. If a click is
heard, the margin is not covered and more gold must be added.
Step 8. Pellets are now added to build up to contour.
The Varney foot condenser is used to confirm condensation
with malleting being slightly more firm. If each pellet
is completely condensed, a dense foil will result which
will be a joy to finish.
