FULL CROWN VENTING TECHNIQUE


LABORATORY PHASE:

Step 1. Place a vent hole through the wax with a 168-008 (Brasseler), twist drill, a 1/2 round bur or a hot straight blunted hat pin on the mesiobuccal surface of the mesial cusp to the underneath occlusal surface of the finished wax pattern.

Step 2. Place sprue parallel to the vent hole and invest according to THE LABORATORY SEQUENCE FOR CAST GOLD RESTORATIONS.

Step 3. Burnout and cast according to THE LABORATORY SEQUENCE FOR CAST GOLD RESTORATIONS.

Step 4. Divest, finish and polish crown according to THE CAST GOLD LABORATORY FINISHING PROCEDURE.

Step 5. Mill vent hole with a 168-008 or similar bur in the fingers.

Step 6. Fit precast #700 gold tapered pin into the vent hole in the casting. These pins should be cast in a hard gold.

CLINICAL PHASE:

Step 1. Try in casting and make necessary adjustments prior to cementation.

Step 2. Remove tooth in area of vent hole with a large round bur or diamond. The area to be reduced on the tooth may be marked with a thin pencil lead through the vent hole of the casting at the time of the try-in.

Step 3. Place crown with cement on tooth with firm pressure while lightly malleting until the cement ceases flowing from the vent hole.

Step 4. Insert the gold precast vent pin into the vent hole with a locking, grooved cotton pliers or hemostats and mallet lightly to place.

Step 5. Remove excess pin with a small separating disc.

Step 6. Use 1/2 inch medium garnet disc in a straight handpiece to reduce pin and gold to the same plane.

Step 7. Use 1/2 inch fine sand disc to further finish the surface.

Step 8. Use 1/2 inch fine cuttle disc to further finish the surface.

Step 9. Using a soft rubber cup, polish with a slurry of flour-of-pumice and then dry 15 and 1 micron aluminum oxide powder.
